Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Developer (Java/Spring Boot) based in Germany.

Join a fully remote product development team working on modern digital products for ambitious organizations. You’ll build reliable backend systems, APIs, services, integrations, and database solutions using Java and Spring Boot. Your work will contribute directly to production features, with ownership extending from implementation through testing and release. You’ll collaborate closely with frontend, QA, DevOps, product, design, and client-side stakeholders in a cross-functional environment. The role offers meaningful autonomy while encouraging developers to challenge assumptions, communicate risks, and understand the wider product context. You’ll work on a project currently expected to run through February 2027, with the opportunity to apply modern engineering practices in a distributed team. This is an excellent fit for a mid-level backend engineer who values clean code, strong collaboration, technical ownership, and continuous learning.

Accountabilities

Develop clean, maintainable, testable, and efficient backend applications using Java and Spring Boot.

Design, build, and maintain secure, reliable REST APIs and backend services for frontend applications and other systems.

Develop and maintain PostgreSQL database schemas, queries, indexes, migrations, data models, and persistence layers using Hibernate/JPA.

Requirements

3+ years of professional backend development experience.

Strong practical knowledge of modern Java development; experience with Java 21 is preferred.

Hands-on experience building backend applications and services with Spring Boot.

Practical experience with Hibernate/JPA and ORM-based persistence.

Good knowledge of PostgreSQL, relational databases, SQL, data modeling, and query performance.

Experience designing, implementing, testing, and consuming RESTful APIs.

Practical experience with automated backend testing and a strong understanding of testing as an integral part of software development.

Comfortable using Git, pull requests, code reviews, and collaborative development workflows.

Familiarity with microservices and distributed systems.

Experience with Domain-Driven Design or Event-Driven Architecture is a plus.

Familiarity with AWS or another cloud environment is advantageous, particularly experience with ECS/Fargate.

Experience in Fintech, SaaS, HR, Payroll, ERP, AI-enabled products, or complex enterprise platforms is beneficial.

Strong ownership and autonomy, with the ability to manage assigned features independently while knowing when to involve others.

Strong communication and collaboration skills when working with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Ability to understand business requirements and translate them into reliable, well-structured backend solutions.

Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code or similar is a bonus.
